How to Propagate Varieties of Ferns
Ferns, especially the Maidenhair fern, are sensitive to all chemical sprays containing petroleum distillates. The same is true for aerosol sprays, and neither should be used on ferns. Always read the manufacturer’s directions and precautionary notes before applying any chemical to your ferns.
You cannot obtain a new fern by inserting a frond in water. It will not grow roots, but you can divide the roots. Division, cutting a section of root off with stems and fronds attached, is the simplest and quickest way to produce a new fern. Use a clean, sharp knife to divide the root clump. Don’t be afraid that such drastic surgery will harm your fern. The parent will regenerate and produce more luxuriant growth in no time at all, and so will the offspring. After potting your newly divided plants, keep the soil moist and mist the plants. If wilting occurs, increase humidity by covering with a clear plastic bag held up and away from the fronds by thin stakes. Keep the new plants (divisions) away from strong light for a couple of days. Most ferns, in particular the Boston fern, can easily be divided.
Rhizomes
New fern plants can also be obtained by division of the creeping rhizome or foot-system of Rabbit’s-Foot and Squirrel’s-Foot ferns. Rhizomes are the visible, thick, fleshy stems that grow along the surface of the soil. With a sharp knife, cut through the rhizome. Make sure to include an end-foot or sprouting point in your cut. If the cut rhizome has roots, gently dig around and under it and remove the whole piece – roots, stems, fronds. Pot the root, leaving the severed rhizome exposed on the surface of the soil. Then treat as you would a divided plant.
Smaller rhizome pieces or rootless pieces without stem and fronds will also produce new growth in time. Place the rootless rhizome on top of moist soil (do not bury it) in a box, flat, or pot with good drainage. Keep it humid, shaded, and warm until rooting and/or evidence of sprouting (new fronds forming) is observed. A terrarium is a good place to start a new fern from a rhizome, root, or rootless section.
Buds
Some, like the Mother ferns, produce new plants called fernlets right on their fronds. Others, like the Hart’s-Tongue fern, produce new plants if the stipe (frond stalk) is inserted as a cutting into a moist soil medium. These fernlets develop from knots in the tissue called buds. Fronds with buds can be anchored to the soil while still attached to the mother plant or frond; or they may be detached and planted separately. Keeping them attached to the mother plant assures the developing fernlets a good supply of water and food. If you choose to detach them, plant in moist, well-drained soil and provide ample humidity until the fernlets are large enough to be exposed to a drier atmosphere. About 2 years is required to grow an 8″ (20.3cm) plant.

How Old Should the Tree Need for Me to Remove the Support
There is really no specific time on how long you should provide tree support for your young tree. This is because trees are different and all require different times to grow. Some grow fast while some take months or years to grow and also depending on the surroundings on which the tree is growing. For one to know if a supported tree no longer needs support is to see how it reacts when it is not supported. When you think you have given it enough time to grow then you can release it for some days to see how it is going to react to the changes. If the tree still look weak then you released it too early hence you need to take it back for support. If it looks like it is strong enough to grow by itself then you can leave it to continue growing by itself.
